Description
Yohimbine hydrochloride is a synthetic compound classified as an indolalkylamine alkaloid. It is commonly used as a fat burner, mydriatic (pupil-dilating agent), and for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This compound acts as an alpha-2 adrenergic blocking agent, specifically blocking the presynaptic alpha-2 adrenergic receptors. Yohimbine's action on peripheral blood vessels is similar to reserpine but milder and of shorter duration. It primarily increases parasympathetic (cholinergic) activity while reducing sympathetic (adrenergic) activity. In male sexual performance, yohimbine may enhance penile inflow, decrease penile outflow, or both through its cholinergic activity and alpha-2 adrenergic blockade. Yohimbine also stimulates mood and may induce anxiety, although this effect requires higher doses. Additionally, yohimbine has a mild anti-diuretic action, likely through hypothalamic stimulation and posterior pituitary hormone release. It does not significantly affect cardiac stimulation or other effects mediated by beta-adrenergic receptors. The potential blood pressure-lowering effect of yohimbine has not been adequately studied and quantified.
Mechanism of Action
Yohimbine acts as a pre-synaptic alpha-2 adrenergic blocking agent. Its exact mechanism of action in impotence is not fully understood. However, yohimbine may improve erectile ability by blocking central alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, leading to increased sympathetic drive through elevated norepinephrine release and firing rate of cells in the noradrenergic nuclei of the brain. Yohimbine may also affect other neurotransmitters, including dopamine, serotonin, and cholinergic receptors, contributing to its beneficial effects.
Purposes of Use
Yohimbine is often utilized during cutting cycles due to its alpha-2 adrenergic blocking properties, which have a pronounced lipolytic effect. Alpha receptors inhibit fat breakdown, while beta receptors promote it. By blocking alpha receptors, yohimbine allows for the free breakdown of fat, releasing energy. It is commonly used in conjunction with clenbuterol to enhance fat-burning effects. Blocking alpha-2 adrenergic receptors can also lower blood pressure, which may rise with the use of other fat burners, while increasing blood flow in adipose tissue, facilitating the transport of fatty acids for oxidation. Stubborn fat deposits in problematic areas often contain a higher number of alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, making yohimbine helpful for targeted fat reduction.
Dosage
- A safe dose of yohimbine is up to 20 mg.
- Typically, the dosage starts at 2.5-5 mg.
Effects
- Has aphrodisiac activity
- Stimulates libido and enhances sexual arousal
- Increases blood supply to the cavernous bodies of the penis
- Improves psycho-emotional background and sexual sensations, alleviating discomfort, insecurity, stiffness, and fear during sex
- Exhibits antidiuretic effects
- Mobilizes fatty acids from subcutaneous adipose tissue, making it useful as a fat burner
- Increases motor activity and physical performance
- In small doses, it raises blood pressure (through vasomotor center stimulation), while in larger doses, it reduces blood pressure (due to alpha-adrenergic blocking action)
- Attenuates the action of serotonin, which is linked to depression and nervousness
Side Effects
- Fluctuations in blood pressure and tachycardia (increased heart rate due to its stimulating effect on the heart)
- Agitation
- Insomnia or drowsiness
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Redness of the skin (vasodilation)
Profile
- Half-life: 6 hours
