Description
Isotretinoin is a highly effective medication for treating severe acne. It inhibits sebaceous gland functioning, reducing oil production and preventing acne development. This anti-acne medication is chemically related to retinoic acid and retinol (Vitamin A).
Mechanism of action
Isotretinoin alters the cell cycle, differentiation, survival, and apoptosis, leading to reduced sebum production, prevention of skin pore blockage, and inhibition of acne-causing bacteria growth. It also induces apoptosis in sebocytes and reduces comedone formation.
Purposes of use
Isotretinoin is utilized by bodybuilders and athletes to address acne, a common side effect of anabolic/androgenic steroid use, during steroid therapy.
Dosage
The recommended dosage of Isotretinoin ranges from 0.5 to 1 mg/kg of body weight per day. Exceptional cases may require higher dosages up to 2 mg/kg/day. The daily dose is divided into two equal doses taken at separate times of the day. It is recommended to take Isotretinoin with meals for better absorption.
