Description
Exemestane is a potent and highly selective third-generation non-steroidal antiaromatase drug. Originally developed as an antineoplastic medication for the treatment of malignant breast tumors, aromatase inhibitors are also utilized by men to reduce estrogen concentrations in the blood and increase their own testosterone and gonadotropic hormones. By inhibiting aromatization, Exemestane prevents the conversion of testosterone into estrogen, a female hormone that, when present in excess, can lead to negative side effects in the brain and hypothalamus. Exemestane cannot reduce already elevated estradiol levels, but it effectively prevents further estrogen formation.
At a dosage of 25 mg, Exemestane is a representative of the third generation of aromatase inhibitors. It creates a covalent interaction with aromatase during the first oxidation cycle, resulting in effective selective irreversible inactivation of the enzyme. This reduces estrogen synthesis in the body by 97%, making it more potent than anastrozole. Additionally, Exemestane is generally better tolerated by patients, with a lower incidence of side effects.
