Description
Bremelanotide, also known as PT-141, is a compound developed for the treatment of female sexual dysfunction, hemorrhagic shock, and reperfusion injury. It activates melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system, modulating inflammation and limiting ischemia. Initially studied for intranasal use in female sexual dysfunction, its development for such use was temporarily discontinued due to adverse effects on blood pressure. Subsequent studies have explored subcutaneous injection with minimal effects on blood pressure.
Bremelanotide is derived from the peptide hormone Melanotan 2, which has been investigated for tanning without sun exposure. Melanotan 2 was found to induce sexual arousal and spontaneous erections. Bremelanotide has shown effectiveness in treating sexual dysfunction in both men (erectile dysfunction) and women (sexual arousal disorder) by directly increasing desire through its effects on the nervous system.
Mechanism of Action
Bremelanotide is an analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) that activates melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system. Its centrally mediated activity makes it potentially useful for treating erectile dysfunction, decreased sexual motivation, and loss of libido.
Bremelanotide, or PT-141, is a powerful erection initiator with minimal side effects, fast onset of action, and a relatively long duration. Recent studies confirm enhanced erectile responses with sexual stimulation. It can act independently or synergistically with PDE-5 inhibitors like Viagra or Cialis, providing an alternative therapy for erectile dysfunction of both organic and psychogenic origin.
Effects
- Promotes sexual desire and erection
Side Effects
- Nausea
- Hot flush
- Headache
Usage
- The first erection occurs approximately 30 minutes after administration. The peak concentration in the blood is reached within 60 minutes and gradually decreases over 4 hours.
- Can be used in combination with other drugs such as Sildenafil and Tadalafil for enhanced effects.
Preparation of Solution
To prepare a solution for injection, take a syringe with a diluent and inject it into a vial containing the lyophilized powder. Tilt the vial so that the needle touches the wall, allowing the diluent to flow down slowly. Mix gently until the powder is dissolved and the solution is clear. Avoid mixing peptides in the same syringe.
Storage
- The solution can be stored in a refrigerator at 2-8 degrees Celsius for approximately 21 days. If bacteriostatic water is used, the storage time may be longer.
