Description
Semaglutide is a recombinant DNA biotechnology-derived glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It shares 94% homology with human GLP-1 and acts as a selective agonist for GLP-1 receptors. This receptor subtype is responsible for the physiological effects of GLP-1, which regulates glucose levels, appetite, and cardiovascular function.
Mechanism of action
Semaglutide exerts its effects through GLP-1 receptors in the pancreas, brain, heart, blood vessels, immune system, and kidneys. It reduces blood glucose levels and body weight by stimulating insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon secretion, and delaying gastric emptying. The prolonged half-life of semaglutide allows for once-weekly dosing. It binds to albumin, providing sustained action and protection against metabolic degradation. Semaglutide is also stable against cleavage by dipeptidyl peptidase-4.
Purpose to use
Semaglutide aids in weight loss by reducing energy intake, suppressing appetite, improving satiety signals, decreasing hunger signals, and controlling food cravings. It also improves insulin resistance and reduces the preference for high-fat meals. Semaglutide has shown positive effects on plasma lipids, systolic blood pressure, and inflammation. In animal studies, it inhibits the development of atherosclerosis and reduces inflammation in plaques.
How to use
The initial dose is 0.25 mg once a week for the first 4 weeks. At Week 5, the dose may be increased to 0.5 mg once a week. The maximum dose is 2 mg once a week. Injections should be administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly using an insulin syringe.
